A fundamental aspect of Geoffrey Key’s work is expression along thematic lines. An idea may emerge and be set down in the briefest of sketches or as a single completed work. Then, sometimes immediately, and sometimes over a period, the idea forms, grows and is assimilated into a series involving rigorous exploration of the subject at hand. Questions raised and answered in one work inform and ignite re-examination in the next, until the artist considers all that is relevant (at the time) has been said and so a natural conclusion is reached. Then it is time to move on – it will often be something at a tangent in a current series that acts as the catalyst for the next. Hence it can be said that from the outset, Geoffrey Key’s work has represented an evolving continuum.
